2010 Chevrolet Silverado is a hybrid car, The fuel-economy figures are fairly respectable, and the hybrid system works flawlessly. The stop/start system was smooth, and the engine kicked off sometimes and I didn’t even notice.
this truck is iconic for a reason, and this Chevy still hangs its hat on power. The 332-hp output is very strong. I launched from a standstill to about 50 mph with ease, mashing the throttle as engine speed hit close to 6,000 revs. You can chirp the tires a bit too, and the brakes are also strong.
What I like about the Silverado, hybrid or otherwise, is how well rounded it is. I put it just behind the Ford F-150 as far as being the total truck package. The steering has a nice weight to it, and this truck handles better than the sometimes ungainly Ram. It also feels gutsier than the Toyota Tundra. I also liked the interior of the Chevy. Great seats, nice gauges, a stellar road view. Plus, the backup camera is very clear. I was stunned at how sharp the white shutters and brick fa?ade of a building behind my apartment appeared on a sunny morning as I backed out. It was like television.
I did think the suspension was a touch less forgiving than some of the other big trucks I’ve been in lately, especially the Ram. There’s just less cushion over bumps. The grille and headlights look bold in front, and unlike the clunky Toyota and even cartoonish Dodge, this Silverado has sleek, clean sheetmetal. It’s a very timeless, universal look.
One other beef: This sticker seems a bit high. I mean, almost 50 grand for a Silverado? Yes, the hybrid technology is important, but the return on fuel economy isn’t that mind-blowing. But, overall, I was excited to drive this mighty Chevy. And I’ll be excited to drive it again.
The idea of a hybrid truck may seem odd, but Chevrolet does a nice job with this Silverado. The hybrid system functions smoothly; no herky-jerky motion or stalling sensation when switching from gasoline to electric power. There’s good power.
The cabin is a fine place to be, featuring quality materials, a good driving position, plenty of room, easy-to-use HVAC and entertainment controls and a great screen that is especially helpful when in use as the backup camera. But the back seats don’t appear to offer much legroom. I didn’t get back there, and maybe with my seat being up so far to reach the pedals, there would be more room in back.
Also, the Silverado doesn’t seem to soak up the bumps and bouncing of rough roads and expansion joints the way our long-term Ram does. But if you’re looking for a big truck and you’re concerned about the environment and/or how much you spend on gasoline, this Silverado hybrid might be the ride for you–if you can pony up the $50K for this Chevy.
